Charles Drew

Charles Drew Was a barrier-breaking Surgeon and medical researcher, best known for his innovations in blood collection and storage during World War II. Drew was born in 1904 in Washington DC, and attended Amherst College, where he was an outstanding athlete and a member of the Omega Psi Phi fraternity. He attended medical school at McGill University and later became the first African American to earn a Doctor of Medical Science degree from Columbia University. He was also the first African American surgeon to serve on the American Board of Surgery.
